  • Blogs of Interest

There are tons of blogs out there with all kinds of fascinating tidbits of info that are interest to writers of all shapes and sizes. This thread is to be used as a depository of any interesting ones you comes across. You can, of course, include you or your friend's blogs.

Up first - Beachcombing's Bizarre History Blog.

I'll just quote the blogger himself:
Dr Beachcombing lives part of his time in the village of Little Snoring in an undisclosed English county (not Norfolk…) and the rest of his time in an undisclosed village in Tuscany. He likes villages.
He is particularly curious about the strange and the unexpected in records of the past: exceptions that prove or disprove rules. He increasingly suspects that there are no rules, but that’s another story…
Over the years he has put together several bulging filing cabinets full of these strange and unexpected details. He has classified them very roughly into eleven categories – used as the organising principle of the blog.
    1) Burning Libraries: books and texts that we have lost with a supplement on Invisible Libraries, books and texts that we imagined.

    2) Cobblers: widely believed historical myths
    3) Forgotten Kingdoms: the countries/states/ regni that time forgot.
    4) Hinge Moments: the moments when history changed.
    5) WIBT: ‘Wish I’d been there’ – moments that Beachcombing would have given up everything but his wedding ring to see.
    6) Wrong Place: Exotic finds – things and people from afar.
    7) Wrong Time: Harbingers and fossils, things and people that turn up in surprising time periods.
8 ) WtH: ‘What the Hell!’ My God! or even I don’t understand this reference AT ALL. Please help.
    9) Rogue Researchers: Academics and scholars who use unconventional techniques.
    10) Weird Wars: Soldiers and generals and mayhem in history.
    11) Images: Striking but little known photographs and paintings that bring the past to life.
He’d also like to add one about famous horses and is plucking up the courage to do so.
He does not expect the following to be read as a normal blog. It is more a ‘library of the damned’ that every so often the brave will turn up in internet searches.

EsoterX is an anthropological investigation of the ontological status of things that go bump in the night. The fact that monsters may or may not be corporeal is of no consequence, as Charles Baudelaire said, “I consider it useless and tedious to represent that which exists, because nothing that exists satisfies me. Nature is ugly, and I prefer the monsters of my fancy to what is positively trivial”. Born in a log cabin behind the Institute for Psychical Research, I am an applied anthropologist by training, inclination, and neurosis, masquerading as a computational linguist and software engineer by day, busy accumulating obscure masters degrees in an attempt to assemble a set of letters after my name that spontaneously result in some sort of gematriac significance. And I’m convinced the universe is a far weirder place than we like to admit and the only reasonable response is that recommended by Hunter Thompson — “When the going gets weird, turn pro”.

Wonders & Marvels began humbly as a website related to an undergraduate course on the “History of Medicine: From Aristotle to the Enlightment,” taught by Holly Tucker in fall 2008 at Vanderbilt University. Originally hosted on Blogger, the website was a place where Holly and the students could post links and articles of shared interest. Students created original articles based on their research and final presentations. You can read some of that amazing work here. And then suddenly and with little warning, it all morphed into something much bigger and wonderfully unexpected…
First other professors started coming by and offering up their insights on the past. They were followed by equally talented writers of historical fiction. It soon became too much work for one person to handle.
Just when Prof. Tucker was ready to throw in the towel and return to a solitary non-technological life in the Ivory Tower, help arrived in the form of student interns, web designers and, beginning in 2014, a Managing Editor.
Wonders & Marvels is now a place for specialists and non-specialists to revel in the stories of the past. It also offers learning opportunities for interested Vanderbilt students to work with Professor Tucker on building the site. Student interns have a chance to interact regularly with scholars and other experienced authors, and even write a few posts of their own.
Wonders & Marvels is proof of the enduring links that exist between teaching and research, readers and writers, past and present. We hope you will enjoy this site as much as we do!

Hello, welcome to Ottawa Rewind, a blog dedicated to stories that I think are pretty cool about Ottawa and the surrounding area. Pull up a chair, grab a drink and enjoy the ride as we rewind time…
Turns out that, far from being a boring government town, Ottawa is weird...

Ephemeral New York chronicles a constantly reinvented city through photos, newspaper archives, and other scraps and artifacts that have been edged into New York’s collective remainder bin. Here we remember forgotten people, places, and relics of the way New Yorkers used to live. We get a big kick out of present-day urban weirdness and idiosyncrasies too.
The site is the creation of a magazine editor from the West Village who recalls stepping over winos to enter the Grand Union on Bleecker Street, a happily chaotic class packed with 35 other first graders at PS 41, and that Mays, not Whole Foods, was once the flagship shopping destination of Union Square. Sometimes wry and often wistful, she feels the presence of the city’s ghosts everywhere.
Basically, if you're writing a story that takes place in New York City in any point in its history, this is the place to go for research.

London Historians was founded in August 2010 primarily to act as a facilitator which:
              • enables all those interested in London’s history to find what they’re looking for quickly and in one place
              • provides a hub for the many dozens of disparate institutions and societies and thousands of individuals, all of whom have a common interest
              • supports conservation and historical research
              • encourages both amateur and professional historians to meet and make new friends with like-minded enthusiasts
Belonging to London Historians is very much a shared experience. We can only be as strong as our membership. We hope you’ll join us for what we’d like to make a perpetual adventure, exploring the history of our amazing city.

If there’s one thing comic book nerds like doing it’s over-thinking the smallest details. Here we turn our attention to the hypothetical legal ramifications of comic book tropes, characters, and powers. Just a few examples: Are mutants a protected class? Who foots the bill when a hero damages property while fighting a villain? What happens legally when a character comes back from the dead? You’ll find the answers to all of these questions and more right here!
Basically, a bunch of actual lawyers (who are comic book fans) go into massive details about how "real" law would work in the comic book universe.

Thought I would add some links here:

Chuck Wendig has a great blog about writing advice. Here's an article about general writing advice.

There's also this for writing women characters:

& K.M. Weiland's youtube channel about writing advice in general:

The Basement Geographer brings you random articles about topics in the world around us, on all manners of topics ranging from serious to whimsical (and often both). Geography is the study of the Earth and everything upon it, covering a wide breadth of topics both physical and human. This blog honours that spirit by randomly careening between wildly disparate subjects from post to post. You may not enjoy every single article, but you’ll definitely find something that piques your interest here.

Doesn't seem to have been updated for sometime now but there's a lot of stuff in the archives.

                      I write books.
But when I’m not writing, I read a lot, and when I read it’s almost always history. The history that I like best is the stuff that no-one else is interested in – I’ll never knuckle down to George Washington or Henry VIII if I can curl up with a strange old book about a forgotten island in the Pacific or social banditry in Brazil. So I tend to stumble across stories that I love, but which are too small, too odd or just too fragmentary to tell my publishers about.
They know much better than I do what is marketable, and inevitably what sells isn’t always what I find fascinating. So I created A Blast From The Past to write about these small, strange stories. Because they’re eye-opening, and because they offer insights of their own into the world we live in. Because I think they ought to be better known. And because I hope you’ll like them too.

Hello, and welcome to Zapato Productions intradimensional! I—your humble site creator—am pleased to offer you a wide selection of amazing discoveries, important theories, life-enriching tools, and other more frivolous diversions, an index of which appears below.
Please take the time to browse through the site thoroughly, as every little bit is vital to a complete understanding of the whole. In fact, you should browse through it many times, as some content is only accessible in the fourth dimension. Furthermore, do try to read the site backwards and, if you get the time, in ROT13. You will be glad you did.
This guy loves conspiracy theories and has links to an insane number of truly ridiculous ones. Click on the 'topics' section on the top right for a big list and prepare to waste a whole lazy afternoon.

The blogger who runs this site claims that her favourite interests are food, wine, history, old photos and collecting weird bits of trivia off the internet.

Hi, I’m Ruby Duvall! Writersblockbuster started as a way for me to collect inspirational art and photography as well as writing references for improving my craft.
I have an enormous number of favorites over at DeviantArt, and I follow several dozen amazing artists there, so that’s why I tend to post several of an artist’s most inspirational works in one post. If an artist straddles several different genres (e.g. sci fi, fantasy, horror), then I try to use only one genre of their works in a post at a time, mostly in an effort to keep the genre tags somewhat clean.
I will never post or reblog something to which I cannot find the original source. If the artist credit is ever incorrect, please let me know and I’ll fix it ASAP. If an artist wishes me to remove their work or update any links in the credit, please let me know and I’ll fix it ASAP.
LOTS of stuff here for writers: everything from historical to world-building to religion to weird art/images. And all categorized.

Slate has The Vault - described as "A Collection of Historical Treasures, Oddities, And Delights". Lots of neat and weird historical stuff, often with original resource materials.
