      http://scifimedhums.glasgow.ac.uk/writing-competition/

We are pleased to announce a creative-writing competition for science fiction on the theme of medicine, health, and illness.
Science fiction has a long tradition of medical stories: Frankenstein (reanimation), The Island of Doctor Moreau (surgery, tissue grafting), Brave New World (eugenics), Flowers for Algernon (disability), I Am Legend (contagious disease), The Continuous Katherine Mortenhoe (terminal illness), Woman on the Edge of Time (psychiatry), Never Let Me Go (cloning, transplantation) … and many others. Our creative-writing competition is intended to stimulate new work in this fruitful area.
We invite science-fiction short stories (and also self-contained novel excerpts) of up to 3000 words that address themes of medicine, health, and illness. Some possible ideas for work might be:
      Future/alien medicine and doctors
      Computerized/robotic healthcare
      Engineered diseases and alien plagues
Future/alien conceptions of health and illness, including mental health and illness
Utopian/dystopian visions of health, illness, and medicine
      Cosmetic and/or elective surgery/transplantation/modification
Present and future disabilities, and their social/cultural (de)construction
Public health and population health, at a global or galactic level
Alternate medical history (what if a medical pioneer had died young, and/or a particular discovery/advance never been made?)
Entries should be no more than 3000 words, and no entrant may submit more than two entries.
The top three entries, and up to seventeen runners-up, will be published in the competition anthology.
      First Prize: £300
      Second Prize: £200
      Third Prize: £150
      Runners-up: £50
Entry is free of charge and open to anyone over 18. Please see the full competition rules.
Entries should be submitted by our new deadline of 29 February 2016 using the online form.
Winners will be decided as soon as possible after the deadline, with a formal announcement at the closing conference to the project ‘Science Fiction and the Medical Humanities’ in mid-2016. We anticipate publication of the competition anthology toward the end of 2016.

        https://chthonicmatter.wordpress.com/nightscript/

Nightscript (Vol. 1) can be purchased via PayPal for fourteen dollars (plus s&h). Copies are also available (in both print and e-editions) through Amazon.com.
        Thank you for your patronage!

Nightscript is published annually, during grand October, in both trade and electronic editions. Each anthology will feature twenty contemporary fictions ranging in length from 2,000 to 7,000 words.
Note: I am currently OPEN to submissions. My reading period for Nightscript (Vol. 2) begins January 1st and ends February 28th.
        N. is a venue for ‘strange tales’, a term used to describe fictions supernatural, uncanny, weird, and so forth. In other words, I am looking for subtle and darksome literary horror. If you feel that your work has been inspired in no small part by authors such as Robert Aickman, Shirley Jackson, Dennis Etchison, Flannery O’Connor, Terry Lamsley, Lisa Tuttle, Thomas Owen, Mary Shelley, Arthur Machen, then N. is probably the venue for you.
Authors are asked to submit their original tales via the email provided below and should allow 1 to 8 week(s) for a response. (If a submission is held for longer than two weeks this typically means that it is being considered.)
Submit .doc files to: nightscript.editor@gmail.com (Please send only one story per reading period.)
Payment is $30 and includes one contributor’s copy.
        N. is a labor of love, and as such I shall endeavor to produce an aesthetically pleasing product for which all contributors can feel proud.
That said, I look forward to reading your work!
Thank you kindly for your interest.

The deadline is actually "until filled" but it's been around for a bit, so I'm putting it in this thread.

          http://www.salgado-reyes.com/submissions/
ALTERED STATES II: a cyberpunk anthology edited by Roy C. Booth and Jorge Salgado-Reyes
Indie Authors Press is proud to announce the upcoming anthology, ALTERED STATES: a cyberpunk anthology Vol. II. for print and electronic publication.
Indie Authors Press is seeking short stories written by established and upcoming writers from around the world with a Cyberpunk theme. We are looking for stories that explore the range that these genres allow.
WIKI: Cyberpunk is a postmodern science fiction genre noted for its focus on “high tech and low life.” It features advanced science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order.
Cyberpunk plots often center on a conflict among hackers, artificial intelligences, and mega corporations, and tend to be set in a near-future Earth. The settings are usually post-industrial dystopias but tend to be marked by extraordinary cultural ferment and the use of technology in ways never anticipated by its creators (“the street finds its own uses for things”). Much of the genre’s atmosphere echoes film noir, and written works in the genre often use techniques from detective fiction.
WE WILL STRONGLY CONSIDER REPRINTS FOR VOL II. That is, stories that have previously been published by a paying market, NOT something self-published or placed on a free webzine. All submissions should:
          • Word Count: 2,000 to 7,500 words preferred, but flexible.
          • Be typed in Courier or Times New Roman 12.
          • Be typed in line with Standard Manuscript Format. Details can be found at www.shunn.net/format/story.html.
          • Include your full details (name/address/telephone number/email address). No multiple submissions
          • All stories must be saved as in .doc format and emailed to: cyberpunk@salgado-reyes.com.
          • Your email subject header should read SURNAME/TITLE/WORD COUNT (include word count)
          Contracts/Payments
Each contributor will need to sign a contract to be emailed to authors whose work is accepted. Initial contract length will be for exclusive print and electronic rights for one year.
Payment will be $10 for each story via PayPal after date of publication. Contributors must have a PayPal account. Contributors will also receive a free, electronic contributor’s copy of the anthology along with deep discount code for print copies good for one year.
We are not looking for stories that include excessive racism, abuse, or political and religious proselytizing. We also will not be accepting any fan fiction.
Please submit only one story at a time – more than this and all stories will be rejected without consideration.
Reprints considered — indicate prior publication history.
The anthology will be edited by Roy C. Booth and Jorge Salgado-Reyes. The editors have sole discretion regarding which submissions will be included in the anthology, their decision is final. Please do not resubmit a rejected submission as it will be rejected unseen without further consideration.
          DEADLINE: Until filled.

Shadows at the Door is in the process of publishing our very first anthology. The anthology will feature illustrations, with an audiobook also being produced. We have an open call for submissions until 1st March 2016. The anthology will be funded through Kickstarter, and will be the first in a series of high quality anthologies. We’re very excited to introduce you to this opportunity.
            Word Count: 5,000 – 7,000.
Fee: £45 on day of publication, 3% of sales over first 12 months and your own copy of the book.
Copyright: Rights remain with Shadows at the Door for 12 months after publication.
Theme: Modern ghost stores, or similar content. Stories must be based locally to each writer. We’re not looking for stories with excessive gore and/or sex, we believe that less is more.
We like stories by M.R. James, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Robert Aickman, Washington Irving, and similar.
Please send your submission to shadowsatthedoor@gmail.com
            Best of luck.

Deadline: March 31st 2016 (proposals deadline) Payment: TBC
                Link: Coffin Hop Press
We at Coffin Hop Press are looking for stories in the 4,000-8,000 word range in the very specific niche of SCIENCE FICTION NOIR (Tech-Noir, whatever you wanna call it) for an anthology to debut in August 2016, edited and curated by Axel Howerton
As with previous anthologies, please send an inquiry with a story proposal before sending a finished story. We will not accept unsolicited submissions.
                coffinhop@gmail.com – subject line: SCI-FI NOIR/<your name here>
Payment terms and details will be discussed once a proposal has been reviewed.
                Proposal deadline: March 31, 2016
Final manuscript deadline: May 30, 2016
Please keep in mind, this is a very specific call for specially tailored stories. Just because your protagonist is a detective, or someone wears a fedora in the year 2095, or a female character is described as having gams is not enough to qualify a story as Noir. Please ensure that your idea, and subsequent story, adhere to the spirit of the genre: Dark, nihilist, psychologically complicated. Characters should be possessed of questionable morals. Institutions should be corrupt and malevolent. Sexual dalliances should always end in convoluted doom.
Apply the themes and character types to a Science Fiction setting and plot, and you will be preparing your nutritional supplementation with appropriate amounts of properly rendered lipids to achieve optimal internal temperature for safe consumption (cooking with grease, man).
We’re looking for Jim Thompson in Space, not Buck Rogers with spats.
Here’s some reference for what we mean: PLEASE READ BEFORE PROPOSING A STORY: Writing from the Shadows_Noir_Axel Howerton (please visit publisher’s site for link)

                    Special Call for Submissions!

We are looking for stories 500-8000 words in length about supernatural entities who feel like outsiders. These stories will be published in our anthology, Fitting In: Historical Accounts of Paranormal Subcultures. We will accept submissions from February 19th through March 31st. The stories must include the following elements:
                    • There must be a supernatural entity who feels like an outsider: The best speculative fiction often says something about humanity. Urban fantasy provides a wonderful metaphor for stories about immigrants and marginalized cultures. Some stories we suggested on the Kickstarter include:
                      • An undead teenager seeking acceptance from her parents.
                      • Ancestor spirits in an unfamiliar afterlife.
                      • Werewolves moving to the city to find work.
                      • Undead (such as a ghul, a brahmaparusha, or an aswang) with unusual dietary needs that doesn’t mesh well with the local vampire population.
                      • Mermaids, selkies, or bunyips forced to find new homes due to pollution.
                      • A fae and a mortal marrying, with neither of their families approving.
                    • It must be first person: There must be a narrator that is telling the story as though they have experienced it.
It does not need to have mad science in it at all.
Though we are not requiring it, we would also love stories that feature protagonists or settings that are outside of what we typically see in mainstream fiction. We love vampires and werewolves, but there are so many other monsters out in the world. We would also like to collect stories from a wide range of authors, including authors with little to no publishing history and authors from traditionally underrepresented groups.
All our other submission guidelines still apply, particularly the request for Standard Manuscript Format. We will not be accepting reprints. Payment will be 1-cent a word.
